Common Carpet Stains and How to Remove Them

When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing we aren’t constantly spilling things all over the largest surface in a room. But alas, carpet stains are just a part of life. No matter how hard you try, sooner or later you’ll have to deal with a spill, but how you deal with it will determine whether that spill turns into a stain. Here we’ve outlined some common carpet stains and how to remove them.

Juice

The key to getting out a juice stain is to dry the area as quickly as possible by blotting it. The longer the liquid sits, the more likely it will be to leave a carpet stain. Once it’s dry, combine ¼ white vinegar, one tablespoon of dish soap, and water in a spray bottle. Use enough of the mixture to saturate the stain. Let this sit for five to ten minutes before blotting dry again.

Pet

With the “bring your pet to the office” craze in full swing, this tip now works for the office as well as the home. First, clean up whatever mess there is. Soak up liquids and pick up solids, with gloves of course. If there is a stain on the carpet, or a smell, try using ¼ cup of white vinegar with a quart of warm water. Let the mixture set in for a few minutes and then blot with a cloth or paper towel until the spot is dry. There are plenty of commercial pet stain cleaners out there, but make sure to look for a non-toxic, preferably green cleaner.

Coffee

Ah coffee, the life-blood of workers everywhere. While cleaning up coffee, make sure the cloth you’re using to clean up isn’t getting so soaked that you are inadvertently spreading the stain. Just like with juice, try the vinegar/dish soap/water spray to get the stain out. If that doesn’t work, consider having a professional cleaning company come in to give your carpet a deep cleaning.
